Apsu
Apsu is depicted as a deity only in the Babylonian creation epic Enuma Elish, recovered from Ashurbanipal's library (c. 630 BCE), but which is about 500 years older. In this story, she was a primordial being made of fresh water and attached to another primordial deity, Tiamat, who was a saltwater creature. The Enuma Elish begins:
"When the sky above had not been named, the land below had not been called by name, there was nothing but the primordial Apsu, their progenitor, (and) Mummu-Tiamat, the one who gave birth to them all.. ."
